Stimulating the detox process with yoga

As a form of exercise, yoga is a great tool for jump-starting the body’s detox process. A fast-paced or intense flow sequence will make you sweat out toxins. In addition, yoga masters like B.K.S. Iyengar said that certain yoga poses stimulate the organs in charge of the detoxification process.

While the medical community is still debating whether these claims have a scientific basis, at the very least, yoga helps us reach a state of introspection, mindfulness, and rest. These qualities are essential for detoxing the mind and relieving stress that increases our toxin levels. Twist poses are particularly good at achieving this.

    Twist yoga poses for detox

The following poses may aid the detox process by massaging the liver, colon, pancreas, and spleen while improving the flexibility of your spine and hips.

    Standing twist yoga poses

    1.   Revolved Downward Facing Dog/Parivrtta Adho Mukha Svanasana

    -          Start in Downward Facing Dog and grab your ankle, shin or knee with the opposite hand without rounding your back.

    1.   Revolved Chair Pose/Parivrtta Utkatasana

    -          Once you reach Chair Pose, twist to one side with hands in prayer and push the opposite elbow against the outside of your knee.

    1.   Revolved Half Moon Pose/Parivrtta Ardha Chandrasana

    -          Read our article on Half Moon Pose for variations on this challenging pose.

    Seated twist yoga poses

    1.   Revolved Easy Pose/Parivrtta Sukhasana

    -          Focus on lengthening the spine and compacting your core before twisting. You can try it while sitting on a chair.

    1.   Pose Dedicated to the Sage Marichi III/Marichyasana III

    -         In Marichyasana III, ensure that your sit bones are on the floor and twist from your upper back, not your lower back.

    1.   Half Lord of the Fishes Pose/Ardha Matsyendrasana

    -          Push your back hand against the floor to help straighten your spine. Prioritize lengthening the spine over bringing your bent leg closer to your body.
