    perfectionism (noun).*

    Overcoming Perfectionism

Do you ever feel anxiety over the need for something to be perfect? If so, you may be struggling with perfectionism. This debilitating mindset can keep you from reaching your full potential.

In this article, I will discuss why perfectionism is harmful and offer yoga-inspired tips on how to overcome it to live a healthier and more fulfilling life.

Finding the root cause of perfectionism

There is a spectrum of when perfectionism is life-affirming and when it is not. I am not talking about the element of precision needed if you're a neurosurgeon, where a slight slip in the wrong direction in surgery could gravely impact a patient's outcome.

Instead, I am discussing the daily flavor of perfectionism that is often born out of a fear of failure. We become so focused on avoiding mistakes that we never give ourselves a chance to succeed.

Stagnation and dissatisfaction with life will result.

Instead of enjoying the process, we become obsessed with the result. We forget that mistakes are part of the journey and that they can lead to growth and learning.

    Embrace and cultivate self-acceptance

Practice self-acceptance to combat perfectionism. Accept yourself, flaws and all. It also means understanding that mistakes are part of life and that they don't define you as a person.

Yoga is a great way to cultivate self-acceptance. Through yoga, you can learn to accept your body and your limitations. You can also learn to honor the present moment, no matter how challenging it may be.

Harness & practice mudita (joy in others' success)

When you think of compassion, you may think of feeling compassion for others. But what about compassion for yourself? Learning to be compassionate towards yourself is essential to creating a more balanced, peaceful life. Fortunately, yoga teaches compassion through its gentle nature.

In yoga, compassion is called mudita or finding joy in others' successes. Praise the good fortune of others while leaving envy and jealousy behind. If you can offer mudita outward, you can learn to direct it inward to self-compassion.

Remember that self-acceptance is key to a healthier sense of achievement. And take some time to practice yoga or another activity that helps you cultivate self-acceptance. You deserve it!
