  • Why You Should Add Half-Moon Pose to Your Practice

Yoga can help us access extraordinary sensations. Finding harmony between effort and spaciousness, between mental strength and inner calm isn’t easy. One of my favorite asanas accomplishes exactly that: Half Moon Pose or Ardha Chandrasana (ardha: half, chandra: moon).

I’ve always wondered whether its Sanskrit name was chosen to illustrate its ethereal effect on the body. It’s a standing pose that challenges balance, opens up the body and guides us to a calm and focused state when coupled with steady breathing. Who doesn’t need more of that in their life?

Yoga can help us access extraordinary sensations. Finding harmony between effort and spaciousness, between mental strength and inner calm isn’t easy. One of my favorite asanas accomplishes exactly that: Half Moon Pose or Ardha Chandrasana (ardha: half, chandra: moon).

I’ve always wondered whether its Sanskrit name was chosen to illustrate its ethereal effect on the body. It’s a standing pose that challenges balance, opens up the body and guides us to a calm and focused state when coupled with steady breathing. Who doesn’t need more of that in their life?

    Benefits of Half Moon Pose

On those days when my energy is stagnant and self-doubt insists on worming its way into my head, I turn to grounding and stabilizing sequences. Half Moon Pose is the highlight because every time I do it, I feel like I’m flying. And not just flying, lightly soaring through the sky while keeping my body firmly planted on the Earth. It’s impossible to reach this pose without smiling. Give it a try!

Once you find joy in the asana, you can turn to the rest of its benefits. Just like most balancing poses, Half Moon Pose guides your mind into stillness and concentration – the perfect combination when you’re feeling restless or scattered.

The effort of standing on one strong leg works to tone your legs and core, while improving hip mobility. Use this pose when your body aches after long days of sitting.

    Half Moon Pose Modifications

While it may appear difficult for beginners, it’s one of those asanas that can easily be modified. If you can’t reach the floor, place a block under your hand. If a block doesn’t provide enough height, you can hold on to a chair. If you’re still working on your balance, don’t torture yourself! Stand in front of a wall and push against it with your floating foot. Whether you decide to modify it or attempt the full pose, be prepared to realize that anything is possible. Because it is.
