“Yoga is a dance between control and surrender – between pushing and letting go – and when to push and when to let go becomes part of the creative process, part of the open-ended exploration of your being."
    — Joel Kramer

Creativity takes many forms. As someone who writes yoga classes and articles for a living, it’s a state of mind I’m often trying to channel. Like a fair-weather friend, creativity only seems to come around when I’ve given it a welcoming environment.

When I’m feeling blocked mentally, I find it’s almost always related to blocks in my physical body. Rigidity and tension in my body seems to transmit the same stale energy into my mindset. That’s why I use my yoga practice to foster flexibility in my body, but also in my mind, leading to a more creative state, on and off the mat.

Below are my 5 favorite yoga poses to practice when I’m seeking a boost in creativity:

5 Yoga Poses to Encourage Creativity | Mukha Yoga

Below are my 5 favorite yoga poses to practice when I’m seeking a boost in creativity:

Headstand / Sirsasana: King of the asanas, nothing flips your perspective like a headstand. It’s a pose that requires great focus, bodily awareness, and a sense of play. Sirsasana is also said to stimulate the crown chakra, clearing a channel between your thoughts and your intuition.

Crow / Bakasana:  Much like headstand, Crow Pose provides an opportunity to flip your perspective and learn to trust in yourself. This arm balance is a challenging and rewarding pose to add to your practice. (Read more on changing your perspective with inverted poses.)

Butterfly / Baddha Konasana: Creative blocks in the mind can be caused by energetic blocks in the body. The hips can be a storage area for negative emotions like stress and anxiety. Practicing hip-opening postures like butterfly pose can facilitate the release of stuck emotions that might be blocking your inspiration.

Child's Pose / Balasana : One of the most common barricades to creativity is a feeling of taking on too much. When you’re constantly moving from one task to the next, it can feel like there’s no time or space to let your creative side shine. Taking a few extra moments to pause and breathe deeply in Child's Pose can stimulate your parasympathetic nervous system and cue your body and mind to rest and digest.

Seated Meditation : To encourage creativity on or off the mat, begin and close your yoga practice with a few minutes of seated meditation. Studies have associated mindfulness-based meditation practices with many cognitive functions including sustained attention and introspection, both of which can facilitate creativity.
