  • Movement Flow: Taking Yoga off the Mat

    May 18, 2023 3 min read

As a lifelong movement lover, I’ve spent the last 5 years dedicating myself primarily to the practice of yoga. The fluid element of a vinyasa flow practice has a way of getting me out of my head and back into my body. That said, I’ve always been drawn to contemporary dance. I love watching the creativity and ease. In the last year or so, I started to wonder if there was a way to use everything I know and love about yoga, to satisfy my curiosity about dance.

They say when the student is ready the teacher appears. About a month after moving to Vancouver B.C - movement flow fell right into my lap. A new teacher named Louis Ngo arrived at the yoga studio I work at. He just so happened to be fully certified in Movement Flow. I’ve had the privilege of playing with this style of movement for about six months now and I can honestly say it’s become my favorite way to move (shhh don’t tell yoga!)

    What is Movement Flow?

Movement flow is a practice that combines dance, martial arts, yoga, and circus-inspired acrobatics.

Born out of a desire to liberate his body to move better, Movement Flow was founded by Slava Goloubov. After an accident at his construction job, he attended a vipassana silent meditation retreat. Throughout the 10 days of stillness, he regained an appreciation for movement. Shortly after, he quit his job and dove deep into the practice of yoga and completed his 200 hour teacher training. His curiosity for new methods of movement continued leading him to train in a diverse range of movements and study. He began training in capoeira, circus, acrobatics, and eventually found himself in China to study with the Shaolin monks. One day he felt caused to pause his quest for new methods, in order to build his own - and so, movement flow was born.

What are the Benefits of Practicing Movement Flow?

    • Increase flexibility and joint mobility - Through exploration of soft movement patterns and a wide range of motion, movement flow can help to relieve stiffness to access deeper flexibility and greater joint mobility.

    • Increase strength - Even though it looks fluid and easy, the bodyweight movements involved in movement flow can help to build a significant amount of strength and foster mind-muscle connection.

    • Let loose and connect to your inner child - As kids, our bodies were merely a vessel for play. Before we developed aesthetic expectations and performance goals, exploring movement for the sake of it was a given. Movement flow allows you to tap back into that childlike sense of wonder and free expression.
