    Relaxing into happiness

We have an inherent need to achieve happiness. We think if this “thing” would happen - or if we just could accomplish a certain task, make more money, find the perfect relationship, or not have to wrestle with all these challenges - only then would we be happy. Well, I have lived enough to know it doesn’t work like that and in the past, it has literally worn me out trying.

We may be driving a new car, but the driver is the same.

What I’ve learned is that by awakening to the reality of the following concepts, I can relax, choose happiness and really appreciate my life as it is!

Happiness is an emotion we feel in the present

Spiritual teacher, Eckhart Tolle, summed up the value of living in the present moment:

Spiritual teacher, Eckhart Tolle, summed up the value of living in the present moment:

“Unease, anxiety, tension, stress, worry—all forms of fear—are caused by too much future, and not enough presence. Guilt, regret, resentment, grievances, sadness, bitterness, and all forms of non-forgiveness are caused by too much past, and not enough presence.”

There are no real problems in the present moment, only situations that require a response. When pressure comes knocking at the door and challenges bring us to our knees, we can pause, breathe and choose our conscious action. But simply, by living only this day, we free ourselves of the regrets of the past and anxieties of the future.

Comparison is the thief of joy

Reframing is important. Instead of trying to grasp happiness just to use it as a big plug to fill a void, we can try and refocus our awareness on simple joys. Happiness is always out of reach and quite fleeting, when we’re looking “out there” and we miss out on what’s happening “right here.”

Joy is realizing how good things already are. Obsessive thinking can convince us that something is lacking within our own lives, feeling scarcity and dissatisfaction.

What if we accepted life as it is and also how it isn’t? Contentment is available when we let life unfold as we embrace our challenges, and let go of expecting everything to be perfect.

Do I want to be right or do I want to be happy?

How we show up for and nurture our relationships can have a profound effect on our overall happiness. We can listen without judgement, don’t have to take things personally and check ourselves when we are overacting.

When we feel the need to prove our point and take a stand for what we think we know, one of the most powerful things we can do is pause and ask ourselves, “Do I want to be right or do I want to be happy?”

No matter how logical or intuitive we are, neither of these virtues will ever enable us to peer into the future and reasonably predict the twists and turns our lives may take, nor the circumstances, fortunes, and friends that might someday be our own. It is, in fact, impossible.

Our happiness is not directed from external forces. When our thoughts and actions emanate from our higher self, we experience a limitless life filled with joy, love, beauty, and peace, no matter what we are faced with. This is the way we are meant to live.

So today, trust the universe to work out all the details while you give up the illusion of control, live this day well, relax into happiness, and learn to love the life you have now.
