Spring Cleaning Home & Body | Mukha Yoga

“Home” can spawn a soliloquy about what is important—is it the people, a feeling, a physical location, or possessions that represent personal history, cultural memory, nostalgia, or even hoarding disorder. Wherever your relationship with home and possessions lands on the spectrum, consider an upgrade in mental levity with a few tips and tricks for energy realignment. What vibration do you want to carry each day?

Here are spring-cleaning techniques to clear old energy from your home and body.

    Spring-Cleaning Your Home

Start with the closet. Pop culture has made the KonMari Method of decluttering and organizing by color a tremendous success. Decide which pieces in your wardrobe and home that spark joy, keep those, and give the rest away. Someone else needs the clothes you’re not wearing and holding around “just in case”.

Floors, carpets, and rugs. Attention all floor surfaces: you’ve been keeping secrets throughout the seasons with possible mites, parasites, crumbs, and who knows what else. While manufacturing industries will persuade you to buy and use their cleaners, I have found that boiling water, white vinegar, and essential oils (like clove and tea tree) can do it all. Forget the harsh chemicals. Buy a floor steam cleaner for hard surfaces. And buy (rather than rent) a carpet cleaner. In the carpet cleaner’s water tank, place 18-20 drops of essential oil and fill with boiling water. The water’s color in the intake reservoir by the end will shock you. And your home will smell amazing, too.

Airing the mattress. On a bright spring day, put the mattress outside for sun-soaking sanitization. Refresh the lair. Air-dry the sheets and comforter.

Sage the house. Press the restart button within the vibration of your home with a smudge stick. Burn and waft the stick. Perform a small personal ceremony filled with clear intentions and aspirations to cleanse the negative energy.

White Sage has been used by Native Americans for thousands of years for purifying and cleansing oneself and others.

    Crossover Space

Create a sacred space for personal time: this could be a corner, a room, a wall, or a tree. Stand, kneel, or sit beside it to honor your home as a body and body as home. Body, mind, and home coincide with self-awakening.

Spring Cleaning our Body (as Home)

Fire ceremony. Rid of the old stories hidden in your brain that keep you from moving forward. Burn them up. Let them go with an intimate, personal fire ceremony. Stop holding yourself back from the past. All you need is a candle, stick, and reflective mind.

High vibrational foods. Cook, serve, and savor high-impact foods with their life force intact, not stripped away with excessive processing. Fuel your body with healthy fats, whole grains, and organic fresh foods. Share with people you adore.

Liquid cleanse. Getting back to your baseline sometimes requires intermediate fasting and a good cleanse. Cayenne-lemon recipe is a great go-to, even as a substitute for a meal or a full-fledged cleanse.

Vibrational meditation. Repeat the seed syllables such as Om Ah Hum or Ong So Hung mantras to reset and open the mind-body connection.

Movement as medicine. Connect first with your body through walking, running, or yoga. Feel the feels. If you have two “bodies”--the mental you and the physical you--then use movement to close that gap of duality until you are one flowing organism.
