  • The Jewel of Surrender | with a guided meditation

    December 18, 2020 2 min read

The Niyama, Ishvara Pranidhana, the jewel of surrender, is an ethical guideline on the 8-fold path of yoga that asks us to release the illusion of control and jump into our life, as it is and as it is not, with our whole heart!

Suffering stems from clinging to people, places, and things that we have no power over.  As we let go of what we can’t change, we have the chance to grow into our authenticity, engage in life with integrity, and be flexible enough to go with the flow.

    Learning from our Asana Practice

Jewel of Surrender | Mukha Yoga

The yogic practice of sukha and sthirra, softness and strength, means moving through and beyond resistance to calm the mind and create the flow of energy through the body. We can liken this to our asana practice - by engaging one set of muscles we cause the opposing muscles to release, promoting strength and flexibility. Try Poses that Flow.

We can strive to embody this same reaction in our everyday life by giving up the illusion that we know best and accepting life as it unfolds.

By being present and practicing Ishvara Pranidhana, we allow for grace, peace, serenity, and faith in a bigger purpose to prepare us for great things as we continue on our precious journey of life.

The Serenity Prayer clarifies this concept quite simply,“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."

    Surrendering in Meditation

It is okay to not know all the answers. Instead of struggling to control the outcome, trust that surrendering creates space for personal power and fulfillment.

Next time you are feeling challenged, you might try this:

Sit in a comfortable position, close your eyes, rest your hands on your knees with your palms open and repeat this mantra: “Show me”.

Wisdom, as elusive as it sometimes seems, is naturally within all of us if we pause, be still, and loosen our grasp. Sometimes we just need to open our hearts and let go of our egos to reveal the magnificent mystery of our lives!
